Friedman's is at the Chelsea Market, former home to all things gluten,
it was the home of the National Biscuit Company.
Any of the sandwiches for sale there can be served on their gluten-free bread, which is from Udi's. This is the best gluten-free bread that I've had. They toasted it up a little and put some dill mayonnaise on both sides, the bacon was thick AND crispy, the egg, over easy - but not so runny that my sandwich was a disaster. Best!it was the home of the National Biscuit Company.
[Not listed on the menu but also available for brunch- gluten free BAGELS and gluten-free PANCAKES. I will be back to review BOTH, hopefully at the same time.]
[Note # 2 is that though my father is prone to hyperbole he claimed the hamburger we ate there on a previous occasion was the Best Hamburger of his Life. So, something for everyone!]
I asked the owner about this miraculous bread - she is always happy to discuss all things gluten-free with me when I go in. She explained that it had to be special-ordered from the manufacturer and she wasn't sure if I, being a mere layperson (and not a restaurant) would be able to get my hands on it.
False. Last night I snagged the last bag of it at Whole Foods. This morning I ate an avocado sandwich with Ronnybrook probiotic garlic basil cheese (from the farmer's market) spread all over it. I also do not have a picture of that because I ate it standing up on the subway platform like a maniac. I pretended it was a bagel. It was phenomenal.
*The beauty of this bread is that it does not need refrigeration. NOR TOASTING. It's almost, like, real! I grossly overestimated the amount of cream cheese necessary for the sandwich as I am accustomed to the thick chewy dense situation of my usual Food for Life Brown Rice Bread.
Happy eating!
